A philosopher once said “It is no measure of sanity to be well adjusted to an insane society”
I am watching my own story within this new docu-drama, LOVE OVER MONEY by John Robbins, the man who walked away from Baskin & Robbins. I was the youngest of 3 children, the only girl and the only adopted child to the Sr. VP of the largest bank in Canada at the time (CIBC) and later, after a bank shake up, he became the Comptroller for the RCA .. Roman Catholic Archiose, aka, Vatican for Canada. He was driven by Power, Capitalism, Greed, secrecy. My brothers and I were just wanting love and playfulness from my Daddy.
This film is a beautiful story of how John Robbins didn’t want to be a rich kid as he saw the hypocrasies. Thus he became true to himself (Ralph Emerson), keeping all his essays under his mattress where his parents would never see it. Covert LOL. After a few books (Rachel Carson’s book on Spring) and going down a few wabbit holes with pesticides, etc. When his Uncle (partner of his father’s) died of heart disease .. he started down another path. And then the Civil Rights movement in the early 60’s. Nixon was a friend of the family. John was torn between 2 worlds, straddling them internally and could not talk to his dad about the tension. He left in the middle of the night and took a bus south to work with Martin Luther King. Extraordinary.
Who didn’t have a Baskin Robbins ice cream or birthday cake, not knowing what we now know?!
You can watch this on Gaia if you have an account or this week free. Deeply inspiring and you may even shed a tear or 2. Heart warming.
I’m sure Foster will be able to relate to this poignant story, coming from the Proctor and Gamble family.
It only takes one person to step out of the family system, using the contacts and resources, to make a difference, especially when they were groomed and cultivated, with roots in a successful wealthy family. So many gems here. Enjoy!
