Most of us have heard, most likely from a militant vegan, that livestock is destroying the environment and causing desertification of the land and meat-eaters are to blame. It turns out, however, that that is a lie that is hastening the destruction of the planet and intensifying the deleterious effects of climate change.
The scientist in this Ted Talk, Allan Savory, has discovered that lack of livestock is what is causing desertification. According to him, the only way to combat desertification, which is engulfing two thirds of the planet, is to graze more animals on the desertified lands according to a planned grazing schedule that he developed, rotating the animals around the land to mimic nature. The animals trample the grass, covering the soil (protecting it from washing away), they leave manure and urine on the grazed lands, then are moved on to a new area. The grazed lands then begin to come to life and flourish with greenery when the animals move on. He provides many examples of this in the video.
According to Allan Savory, this method will solve much more than just climate change. In certain places (Africa and Mexico), greenery is already being restored to desertified areas using this method. Restoring the greenery in poor African countries also has the potential for poorer populations to begin to grow more of their own food.
I believe whole-heartedly in living in harmony with nature. Humanity as it is, has no respect whatsoever for nature. I do not like any of the solutions the power clusters in this world are moving towards as answers to the problems they’ve created-their solutions either by ignorance or by design, invariably lead to even bigger problems. Carbon taxes, shutting down small farmers and putting everyone on a smart grid for electricity seems like a deranged scheme which will facilitate a multitude of nefarious applications in the long-run.
Let’s do this instead:
